Penhall Technologies can help you locate rebar, pipes, post and pre tension cables, conduits and many other subsurface hazards that may be hidden in concrete. Our expertly trained analysts can also detect voids within or underneath concrete slabs. As a safety leader in the industry, contractors, engineers, and government agencies have come to trust Penhall first for safe and precise scanning services.
Concrete rooftop scanned to locate both rebar and post tension cables in preparation for cutting
In March of 2017, Penhall was hired to perform concrete scanning work for a large contracting firm at a site in uptown Charlotte, NC. The client’s goal was to remove a 2”x2” area of concrete from the rooftop of a building without striking any of the abundant post tension cables supporting the structure. As displayed in the image, the red markings indicate three post tension cables running directly through the concrete section to be removed, while the black represent rebar running perpendicular to the cables. This project proved to be fairly complex due to the placement of the scan area. The rebar running from left to right provided support to an underlying beam, and were placed on top of the post tension cables. Because of the GPR signal blockage caused by the rebar, the cables were hardly visible underneath. However, exceeding the scan boundary by a foot or so past the rebar cluster provided a clear picture of the post tension cables and assisted tremendously in locating them accurately. Each scanning job requires a different and methodical approach, and Penhall’s GPR Analysts know different approaches to deliver successful results.
Inspecting concrete with ground penetrating radar to locate hazards to drilling
Penhall was called upon to do concrete scanning in several areas at a location in Charlotte, NC. The 8″ thick floor was inspected using ground penetrating radar for any obstructions or hazards. After scanning, it was safe to perform the intended drilling of multiple cores.
GPR scanning used to find structural reinforcements in multiple core drilling sites
In response to a client in Greenville, NC, we were able to use our concrete scanning expertise to find obstructions, such as structural reinforcements, in multiple area before perform core drilling.
Scan Concrete Column to determine where the rebar is before drilling
Penhall Technologies was hired to perform GPR concrete scanning on a column to locate rebar. The contractor was required to know the location of the rebar in the column in order to drill cores to test the integrity of the column. We scanned a 3ft by 6ft area using the GSSI HR Mini to locate the vertical and horizontal rebar. Our GPR Analyst was able to successfully provide all the information needed to complete the project in a timely manner.
Ensure all conduits retain their integrity before cutting by locating them first
Penhall Technologies was hired to GPR Concrete scan in a hospital in Charlotte to locate conduit. The contractor was updating equipment and wanted to make sure no conduits would be cut in the process. We scanned 100 sq ft using the GSSI HR Mini to locate rebar and confirm no conduits were in the area. We also used a radio detection unit to confirm no live power was in the area. Penhall Technologies was able to ensure that no conduits were damaged during the completion of this project.
GPR used to scan elevated concrete slabs on multiple levels in preparation for drilling
Penhall Technologies completed scanning project at another location in Charlotte, NC. A customer needed 16 locations scanned on 16 different levels of a building prior to drilling. A GSSI StructureScan Mini was used to collect data in 16 4’X3’ areas around the desired locations. The customer wanted to locate any rebar and PT cable that may be in the slab. The result showed rebar and cable in the slab and were marked accordingly, which then gave a guideline of where it was safe to drill.
