Penhall Technologies performs concrete scanning and core sampling for an aerospace and defense company in Haleiwa, HI

concrete scanning for commercial satellite installationRecently, an aerospace and defense company hired Penhall Technologies to scan the base foundation walls of a commercial satellite installation in Haleiwa, HI. They were planning to replace an existing dish with a new one and needed to know the integrity of the concrete base structure. The company needed six 4” core samples to submit to integrity testing to determine whether the existing base structure could be used or if a new base would need to be constructed at a substantial cost. 4 of the cores were to be through 12” concrete walls and the remaining two were to be 12” deep core samples from the exterior of 3’ thick angled walls. The core samples needed to be in areas with no cracking and needed to miss all structural rebar. Using the GSSI Mini HR, Penhall’s scan analyst marked the locations of all rebar and confirmed approximate depths. To make sure the core drilling didn’t impact any objects inside the facility, the analyst suggested using the Hilti trans pointer to give the customer exact locations of where the core drilling would penetrate inside the facility. The customer was very pleased as there was a large amount of equipment as well as electrical conduits mounted to the walls. Penhall Technologies was able to exceed the expectations of the client by not only locating the rebar, but marking them out on the surface in real time using lumber crayon and showing exactly where the penetrations would occur. Our Penhall Company core drillers were drilling immediately after the scans which saved the customer time and money. The project was completed in a safe and non-destructive manner, all core samples missed rebar and cracks. Penhall Technologies of Hawaii has the capability and the man power to meet your needs in a timely manner, ultimately ensuring your projects get finished safely and on time.

Scanning ensures safety when performing flat saw cutting into concrete

Safe to flat saw after concrete scanning for obstructionsAt a job site in Honolulu, HI, Penhall was asked to scan for any obstructions prior to flat sawing. The concrete that was scanned was 5400 linear feet, where we were able to find and mark all obstructions to ensure safety when cutting.

Ground penetrating radar used to locate obstruction before core drilling

GPR Scanning to locate post tension cable before core drillingWhen Penhall was tasked to scan for another client in Honolulu, HI, we used ground penetrating radar in 6 different areas of the location. This was to ensure that it was safe to core drill 6″ holes into the 12″ thick concrete slab.

Finding rebar and identifying other hazards in suspended concrete slab

Finding rebar and identifying hazards with GPR concrete scanningAt yet another location in Honolulu, HI, ground penetrating radar was used to identify hazards within a 6″ suspended concrete slab. After scanning, the client was now safe to have an 8″ diameter core drill performed.

Concrete scanning detects post tension cables

Concrete scanning to find post tension cable and rebar in slabWe recently worked with another client in Honolulu, where we did concrete scanning on 120 different areas at a single location. Penhall was able to detect post tension cable prior to core drilling as to avoid risking any accidents.

We mark the rebar and other hazards after scanning

Marking rebar and other hazards with concrete scanningIn order to prepare for some sawing, Penhall inspected 530 square feet of concrete using GPR scanning. We were able to locate any obstructions so that the area was good to cut safely.
