Penhall performs concrete scan to identify unknown metal objects and live conduits within the slab

concrete scanning to locate live conduitsOur Hawaii field office received a request for GPR scanning and utility locating on an elevated concrete slab. The contractor required a GPR scan and utility locate of a 92’ x 2’5” trench to safely enable electricians to lay new conduit for electrical drop boxes throughout. The analysts’ mission was to analyze data to see if the contractor was clear for a 3” depth trench throughout the layout. There were two problems that arose; (1) Utilizing the StructureScan Mini XT, the analyst was able to pick up a metal object that was narrow, approximately 30’x1” throughout the center of a portion of the trench at 1” below the surface. After notifying the contractor, he conducted a field verification with a hammer drill in several spots in which we were able to determine that it was an old metal tile edging. (2) The center section of the trench layout contained wire mesh in which we were unable to obtain readable data on. After a discussion with the contractor regarding the predicament, the analyst was able to clear an alternate route that would still be acceptable to the blue print layouts. After utilizing the RD7000 EM Utility Locator, the analyst was able to locate a couple of live conduits running across the bottom of the slab but the contractor was still able to clear the 3” depth for the new trench layout. After careful examination of the GPR and utility locate data, the contractor was more than satisfied and confident with proceeding with his plans. concrete scanning for commercial satellite installationRecently, an aerospace and defense company hired Penhall Technologies to scan the base foundation walls of a commercial satellite installation in Haleiwa, HI. They were planning to replace an existing dish with a new one and needed to know the integrity of the concrete base structure. The company needed six 4” core samples to submit to integrity testing to determine whether the existing base structure could be used or if a new base would need to be constructed at a substantial cost. 4 of the cores were to be through 12” concrete walls and the remaining two were to be 12” deep core samples from the exterior of 3’ thick angled walls. The core samples needed to be in areas with no cracking and needed to miss all structural rebar. Using the GSSI Mini HR, Penhall’s scan analyst marked the locations of all rebar and confirmed approximate depths. To make sure the core drilling didn’t impact any objects inside the facility, the analyst suggested using the Hilti trans pointer to give the customer exact locations of where the core drilling would penetrate inside the facility. The customer was very pleased as there was a large amount of equipment as well as electrical conduits mounted to the walls. Penhall Technologies was able to exceed the expectations of the client by not only locating the rebar, but marking them out on the surface in real time using lumber crayon and showing exactly where the penetrations would occur. Our Penhall Company core drillers were drilling immediately after the scans which saved the customer time and money. The project was completed in a safe and non-destructive manner, all core samples missed rebar and cracks.
