Locate underground utilities to complete your project safely
Before a local business could expand their driveway, a portion of the existing parking lot needed to be removed. The client asked Penhall Technologies to locate all utilities within a 30’x 120’ area along the edge of the parking lot. The analyst started by clamping directly to any risers or transformers on site with his RD71000 unit. He then used the RD 7100 to trace out the signal into the scan area. The analyst also used the GSSI UtilityScan to confirm any findings. The hazards found were an electric line running through the middle of the lot, and a storm drain that reached a junction along the outer edge. The analyst marked each utility with spray paint and marking flags. Upon completion of the scan, the customer was happy with the results.
Locate electrical lines and utilities before cutting into concrete
A customer needed to locate all utilities below a sidewalk in a parking lot before an overhead canopy was built. In order to install the columns that would support the canopy, it was necessary to saw cut out portions of the sidewalk. In this scenario, a transformer that fed all exterior light posts was only a few hundred feet away from the scan area. This meant that it was likely that electrical lines were buried beneath the sidewalk. Using the RD 7100, Penhall was easily able to trace out and mark the electrical line. After that, we used the GSSI UtilityScan to determine that no other utilities were present in the scan area. The electrical line ran directly under one of the locations marked for a saw cut, meaning this quick locate likely saved the contractor an expensive and time consuming repair, and helped avoid a dangerous situation.
Before remodeling a gas station, locate all underground utility lines to ensure safety
A general contractor hired Penhall Technologies as their private utility company. The job consisted to perform underground utility locating at a local gas station in Atlanta. The client wanted the service done in preparation for remodeling of the gas station. Our analyst sough for and marked all utilities. The utility survey helped ensure the job site was safe, and the client continued with his remodeling project.

Many hospitals require GPR scanning before performing any type of remodeling work on campus. A local hospital in Stockbridge hired Penhall Technologies in preparation for an upgrade to the hospital. The instructed the analyst to head to the parking lot to find all possible utilities. The analyst used the GSSI 400MHZ antenna (pictured) for this job. He located all the utilities in the parking lot. As a result, the hospital resumed their upgrading project in a safe and timely manner.
Locate underground gas tanks for a natural gas tank farm
Penhall performed a utility locating service at a natural gas tank farm in Austell, GA. In addition to his training, our GPR analyst performed a safety orientation. After this, he was ready to go out to the jobsite. After arriving, he located and marked all underground utilities in a 2,000 LF x 2′ wide trench. He successfully found all utilities. Due to this, the client could move on with a safe and successful project.
