Penhall Technologies received a request for GPR scanning and utility locating a concrete slab on grade at Covanta, locally known here in Hawaii as H-Power (Honolulu Program of Waste Energy Recovery). The contractor’s purpose in having us scan and perform the utility locate of the 54’x51’ area was to enable him to proceed with a demolition of an old conveyor belt system to make way for a brand new one. The job required two GPR Analysts, two RD7000’s and one three wheel cart. There were numerous conduits and pipes throughout the requested scan area. The contractor’s main concern was to identify the main 480 power in which he requested green paint to be sprayed. We carefully examined the data and informed the contractor of our results and he became a happy Customer from beginning to end. Electromagnetic detection and GPR used to locate utilites and other anomolies within a concrete slab
Penhall Technologies was called upon to scan and utility locate a slab on grade for new trenches inside a professional center in Kaneohe, HI during the renovation/demo phase. During this time the building offices on the above floors were still open and helping various customers. The scan analyst was able to clamp onto various existing conduits and drain pipes coming out to the slab, which allowed him to trace them throughout the new trench zones by using individual signals on each object. The HR mini was used to locate any unusual events within the concrete itself; and then the EM Utility Locator (RD700) was used to help identify any EM fields (electromagnetic fields) within and under the concrete slab. The size of the two areas that need to be cleared were (1) 46 ½ ‘X 145 ½’ & (1) 20 ½’X 70 ½’. The areas in which EM Fields were noticed were marked on-site with red paint and drain/plumbing lines were marked with green paint. By doing this it allowed the saw cutter to safely cut and avoid damaging anything. The saw cutter was able to successfully cut the all the new trenches without any damage and causing no disruption to services to the active facility and offices on the floors above.
Ground penetrating radar used to locate underground utilities and other hidden obstruction
At a location in Makakilo, HI, a customer needed to locate underground utilities along with any hidden obstructions. The area to scan was approximately 300 x 100 yards. Our analyst used ground penetrating radar to locate electrical lines, fiber optic lines, and other utilities successfully.
