Las Vegas Utility Locating Project that Penhall Worked On
Penhall goes to a Nevada Test site to perform utility locating service using ground penetrating radar
Penhall Technologies was recently hired at a Nevada test site. Our analyst was requested to perform GPR (ground penetrating radar) scanning to locate any possible underground pipes and electrical conduit. Our analyst mentioned that this was an interesting project due to the unique temperature conditions. It was also interesting to see and scan the unique ground structure caused by the years of nuclear testing.
Penhall Technologies locates underground hazards
Penhall Technologies was called out to locate utilities under an abandoned lot that was to be demoed for new construction. The lot was approximately 850 linear feet by 500 linear feet and was already in rough shape, making it difficult to scan in some areas. The analyst brought out the utility cart with a 400MHz antennae under a GSSI 4000 operating system for deeper locations, and the RD 7100 for more shallow lines. The analyst was unable to use the transmitter to induce a tone onto the utility lines because they were not exposed. Penhall Technologies located several utilities near the surface, within a few feet. The analyst also located an underground storage tank that was unknown to the contractor previous to Penhall Technologies findings.
Before installing a new fence, locate all utilities for safe digging
A paving company contacted Penhall Technologies prior to installing new fencing. The customer needed to dig to a depth of 3 feet to install each fence post. The analyst was able to scan along the fence line to locate any unknown private utilities. A ground penetrating radar unit was used to locate the underground utilities. GPR sends electromagnetic pulses into the ground and the findings are displayed on a computer screen for analysis. A radio detection utility wand located live power and site lighting close to the fence line. The real time findings were marked on the surface with spray paint.
