Recently, a solar energy company hired Penhall Technologies to scan the lawn of a residential home. The solar energy company, wanted to find a clear path to dig a trench connecting the solar array to the power meter on the house, a distance of approximately 200 feet. The solar array was located in the rear of the home along with a barn outfitted with power and water, a pool, and several lampposts. The scan was completed using two different technologies. The first approach to this problem was to GPR scan the back yard to locate any anomalies in the ground. The GPR equipment used was a SIR 4000 with a 400 MHz antenna from GSSI. Buried objects found during the GPR scan included various types of power, water, communication lines, and a septic system. After locating all the possible hazards in the ground the trench was successfully completed without damaging any existing utilities. After, the GPR survey was complete an Electromagnetic Detection wand- the RD7100, was used to verify the accurate identification of power lines in the ground. The project was completed in a safe and non-destructive manner.
