Core drilling is a necessary step at some point for virtually all concrete structures. Whether you need to make an opening for a manhole, install plumbing or electrical lines, or to pull a sample of concrete for testing, quality cores are a must.
Basics of Core Drilling
Core drilling is a type of service in which a drill is used to remove a cylinder of material, called a ‘core.’
This type of concrete cutting is used in many applications, including but not limited to:
- Walls, floor slabs, and ceilings for electrical and communication services, cabling, plumbing, or HVAC
- Slab and roadway holes for doweling drilling, rebar tie-ins, or drainage
- Recessed lighting and fixtures
- Sampling and analysis of material
Penhall Company can drill anywhere from 1 inch to more than 100 feet deep with the use of continuous tubing technology.
We strive to provide the best service possible for all your core drilling needs. Our dedicated team of professionals is outfitted with customized drilling equipment to safely and effectively drill holes through any hardened materials. No matter the size, depth, or condition—even in tight or confined spaces—no job is too big or small.
Flat sawing (also called slab sawing) is used to create openings and trenches in order to complete such tasks as creating control joints or laying underground wires and pipes.
From a small score to deep cuts, our flat saws cut a range of depths through both asphalt and concrete. Penhall uses saws equipped with a diamond blade to cut flat, horizontal concrete and asphalt surfaces to depths of up to 33 inches.
With equipment and labor resources throughout the country, Penhall’s dedicated team of flat saw operators have both the horsepower and manpower to meet your needs.
WALL, WIRE & HAND SAWING
Generally used for HVAC, window, and doorway openings, our wall saws are incredibly precise. Operated remotely, our saws cut to the shallowest and deepest depths. In stark contrast to other removal techniques, wall sawing uses low vibration, which minimizes collateral damage when removing concrete from an existing structure.
Penhall uses track-mounted wall cutting saws to ensure straight cuts and professional results.
- Can be operated remotely
- Are configured for almost any angle to aid in the extraction of waste slabs
- Make precise cuts up to 38 inches deep
Sometimes, concrete structures are too large or awkward to accommodate traditional concrete saw cutting. The material might be too tough, or there may be limitations on workspace and time. We use an innovative approach with wire sawing where other methods don’t cut it, providing an ideal solution that imposes virtually no limits on sawing depth.
This solution can be used above grade, below grade, or underwater.
Using diamond impregnated beads strung on multi-stranded cable, our skilled wire sawing team guides the diamond wire onto a series of hydraulically or electrically-driven flywheel pulleys and positions the wire at the exact location that needs to be cut for your application.
Penhall’s diamond saw wire cutting expertise provides several unique benefits for our clients, including:
- Safe, efficient, and cost effective.
- Can be applied to structures of any depth or length including lock and dam retrofits, bridge pier modifications, industrial plant and process facility upgrades, metal engine blocks, nuclear decommissioning, steam generator replacements and plant maintenance outages.
- Performs consistently in confined spaces—including underwater—and leaves minimal impact on the environment.
- Creates clean, precise cuts through heavy rebar, plate steel, embedded steel beams, and heavily reinforced concrete.
- Allows for mass concrete removal without breakage, dust, or vibration.
- Eliminates over-cutting at corners and structural damage.
- Equipment is fully portable so cuts can be performed from any position.
We use a variety of handsaws ranging from electric, gas, and hydraulic powered. Primarily used for tight quarters and situations where hand demolition is needed, our sawing options have you covered.

Often when Thompson has used Penhall it has been in an outage situation where safety, timing, and production are paramount. Penhall has always successfully completed the work on time and within the agreed upon budget. They have a meticulous attention for detail, a great regard for safety, and are readily available and willing to answer any questions. With their numerous years of experience, they were more than capable of thoroughly handling any problems that arose.
In my opinion, Penhall would be an excellent choice to be considered as a critical team member of any industrial construction project.

Penhall Company has always been on the leading edge of technology, this (digital x-ray) is just one more example.
I contacted [Penhall] for 2 floor scans on [a] 5th floor room. [They were] able to come and complete the work needed by [the] afternoon. We thank Penhall for always being accommodating for our project success

The scan done of our existing slab saved both the owner and myself money and headaches. The scanned lines were undocumented power lines for future expansion. If we would have hit those lines it would have been a mess and would have not only cost our project money, but also the project in the future that is planned for those lines. Thank you for what your team did.
The work performance of Josh, Henry, and other crew members has been exceptional. The crew arrives on time and prepared to work. The Penhall crews have met or exceeded expectations during their time on the project. I was fortunate enough to witness several operations, including the rebar scanning, which turned out to be a new learning experience for me. Karina took the time to teach me how the rebar scanning device worked. In addition, Penhall crews assisted with resolving any unknown issues that presented a challenge. For example, Henry played an active role in resolving issue of avoiding rebar during the coring operations and minimized any potential impacts.
The communication efforts between BZJV staff and Penhall demonstrated true partnering between contractor and sub-contractor and to the success of all. I personally enjoyed working with Penhall and look forward to continuing the working relationship in the future.
Just wanted to drop you and your team a line of appreciation on the great service Penhall provided on the bridge deck grinding needed for our project. It truly was a pleasure working with Penhall glad the company keeps the people that help them be successful from state to state. Thanks again for your service.
