STRUCTURAL DEMOLITION
Structural demolition—versus complete building demolition—typically involves selective demolition within a concrete and steel structure. This service is usually required to seismically retrofit an existing structure to bring it up to current code, or to strengthen the structure. Structural demolition is also used during the renovation of existing structures to add features such as new stairs and elevators in a hotel or mall, or to add onto an existing structure.
Structural demo avoids the cost of complete demolition and rebuild by retaining and reusing existing structures.
One of the core benefits of structural demolition, when the service is relevant to a project, is that an owner or developer can retain and reuse large portions of the existing structure while avoiding the significantly higher costs associated with complete building demolition and rebuild.
Another core benefit is that structural demolition can be completed on an accelerated timeline. Other trades can follow behind the structural demolition and quickly reconstruct, renovate, and renew, often on multiple levels at a time for larger structures.
SELECTIVE CONCRETE DEMOLITION
Selective concrete demolition uses specialized means and methods to safely and successfully remove concrete while preserving the structural integrity of elements that are to remain in place. These means and methods are typically executed by isolating the structural elements to be removed from the elements to remain in place at the designated demolition limits. By using precise methods of concrete wire saw cutting, track/wall sawing, line drilling, or other mechanical means prior to the removal of the designated demolition area, Penhall can ensure required structural elements remain in place and are not impacted by the removal process.
The primary benefit of utilizing selective concrete demolition methods is that they offer the safest and most precise means of demolition.
Selective demolition methods allow Penhall Company to complete the desired demolition task while minimizing disruption of other activities and reducing or eliminating system downtime.
BUILDING DEMOLITION
Penhall Company has a more than 60-year-long resume of safely and successfully removing virtually any type of structure.

Penhall Company has an extensive list of successfully completed projects in nearly every market sector, both private work and public work:
- Commercial
- Industrial
- Hospital / Healthcare
- Education
- Stadium / Theatre
- Parking Structure

Specialists in the Nation's Most Difficult Projects
Penhall Company specializes in building demolition projects with significant time or physical constraints. We excel in demolition pre-planning and problem solving to successfully find solutions for some of the nation’s most difficult projects.
Some examples of typical constraints we encounter on building demolition projects include:
- Shortened duration to minimize loss of revenue for commercial properties
- Shortened duration due to event schedule
- Shortened duration due to facility or plant shutdown
- Minimizing impact on end-users or adjacent public
- Low impact / noise reduced demolition methods
- Emergency response
Environmentally Conscious
Penhall Company prides itself on going ‘green’ with its demolition services!
Penhall Company can partner with general contractors and owners wishing to obtain LEED certification on their construction projects to help them achieve LEED credits during the building demolition.
Concrete is one of the greenest building materials. In most cases, 100% of concrete debris generated during building demolition can be recycled and reused. Processed concrete is taken to crushing sites where it can be turned into base material for reuse.
Ferrous and non-ferrous metals are usually separated at the job site to be recycled and diverted away from landfill.
Construction debris (“C&D”)—consisting of materials other than metals and concrete, such as wood, drywall, flooring materials, etc.—can be sent to diversion stations. At these stations, our hauling and disposal partners maintain strict logs of the tonnage of material separated and sent for recycle or reuse versus the landfill. Most diversion stations offer a 75% to 90% diversion rate.
CONCRETE PAVEMENT REMOVAL
Concrete pavement removal can be performed without disturbing the subgrade, allowing for the fast-tracking of removal and replacement projects.
Today’s highly productive walk behind flat saws have made it possible to efficiently sawcut concrete paving up to 32” deep. Concrete pavement is sawcut into sections of varying size, depending on the disposal method being used, and removed with a slab crab bucket on an excavator without disturbing the subgrade. The slab crab removal method allows for the equipment to lift the sections from the subgrade while sitting on the concrete paving. This method additionally eliminates disturbance to below-grade utilities that may otherwise be impacted by traditional breaking or impact hammer methods.
Penhall is a pioneer in cutting-edge highway and runway removal techniques.
The primary benefit of the sawcut and removal method for concrete paving is showcased in highway pavement and fast-track runway replacement projects, as well as operating facilities where sub-surface disturbances are not permitted.
Penhall Company pioneered modern airfield pavement removal techniques back in 1998, when we successfully removed a 9,000 LF runway at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in only 7 days. More than 20 years later, we continue to improve upon our best-in-industry approach to concrete pavement removal.
INTERIOR SOFT DEMOLITION
Penhall Company/Concrete Coring Co. of Hawaii has been a longtime leader in our industry for interior soft demolition. Our primary source of work comes from the hundreds of hotels scattered throughout the islands, from Waikiki Beach to Waikoloa on the Big Island, and resort areas in Kauai, Lanai, Maui, and even the tiny island of Lanai.
Typically, each hotel goes through either a facelift or complete renovation of rooms, corridors, and public areas every 7 to 10 years. The demolition may involve complete bathroom upgrades, including removal of all existing fixtures, walls, doors, plumbing, lighting, and flooring. The rooms may also get new wallpaper, fire sprinkler systems, lanai sliders and railings. Our work involves the removal of all such items in a neat and clean fashion. We oftentimes only have two days on a floor (18 to 30 rooms) to complete this removal, so that the next trade may complete their work.
Our reputation for being able to complete challenging projects on deadline precedes us. But we take even greater pride in our commitment to safety.
We have been known to finish work on time even with the most aggressive scheduling, setting the subsequent steps of a fast-tracked project up for success.
We do inherently dangerous work and make it safe. Our labor crews are extremely conscientious, using proper PPE on a daily basis and keeping injuries to near-zero.
Pre-planning has been our key to success. We iron out most of the pinch points on our projects, find the solutions beforehand, and expedite the work in the safest, most productive manner we can. This is, after all, what all professionals should do, and we always endeavor to set the best possible example.
ASBESTOS REMOVAL (HAWAII)
Penhall Concrete Coring Company of Hawaii provides safe, compliant and cost-effective removal, transport and disposal of asbestos-containing materials.
Once thought to be safe, asbestos was commonly used as insulation and fire retardant in residential and commercial construction. While asbestos can be safely left untouched for many years, when disturbed, it releases harmful fibers into the air. These fibers, if inhaled, can cause serious health problems.
Each project is managed in a comprehensive manner, with:
- Site inspection
- Hazardous materials survey
- Hazard management plan development
- Regulatory agency approval
- Abatement
- Pre- and post-work monitoring
- Clearance confirmation prior to re-occupancy
We provide a turn-key service for demolition and asbestos abatement.
Asbestos abatement and demolition go hand-in-hand. Penhall's approach to demolition and abatement includes the ability to handle both known and unknown (discoverable) hazardous materials as they are encountered. This allows a continuous workflow, without stoppage, with the added benefit to owners of having the entire project managed by a single contractor.
