Steel Bridge

Steel Bridge is located in Portland, Oregon. It is one of the most heavily trafficked roads in the regions, leading into and out of the city center. The purpose of this project was to make major upgrades to the light rail system to improve resiliency, keep trains on time, and create a smoother ride.

Because this project involved shutting down one of the main bridges in Portland for close to a month and re-routing it’s main commuter service, our schedule was extremely important. Penhall worked around the clock to ensure a quick and speedy turnover. We had 3 days to complete the west side of the bridge and 5 additional days to complete all other work. We selectively demolished around 600LF of 8.5″ slab with light rail track embedded inside of it. The slab to be demolished was meant to be poured directly on top of the original 100+ year old bridge deck. We also provided perimeter cuts on either side of the light rail to aid in removal of tracks, drilled thousands of holes for future dowels and completely demolished one of the turnouts while working under low hanging OCS wire.

*Only ran a max of six flatsaws at one time. We kept backup saws in case equipment went down.
