PROJECT
Denver International Airport Renovations
Penhall Subsurface has supported ongoing renovation and expansion projects at Denver International Airport (DIA) for approximately six years, providing digital X-ray imaging to help contractors identify embedded utilities before concrete coring and demolition. Working during overnight hours in an active airport environment, Penhall Subsurface helps support critical infrastructure improvements while minimizing disruption to daily airport operations.
PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS
Scope of Work
Penhall Subsurface performed digital X-ray imaging across multiple areas of the airport to identify embedded objects and utilities within concrete slabs and walls before new cores could be drilled for additional and upgraded building services.
Project Goal
The goal was to provide contractors with the information needed to plan coring and demolition safely while supporting the installation of new utilities throughout the airport’s ongoing renovation and expansion projects.
Services and Equipment
Penhall Subsurface utilized a Comet Evo 300D X-ray system and Novo detection system to capture images of concrete slabs and walls. This work supports the identification of embedded utilities and other potential obstructions before concrete is penetrated.
PROJECT MILESTONES & PENHALL'S IMPACT
Coordination and Project Challenges
Performing industrial radiography in a live airport environment requires careful scheduling and coordination. Penhall Subsurface has worked recurring overnight shifts to accommodate airport operations while supporting contractors and subcontractors across multiple project areas, including Great Hall security enhancements, airline and baggage check-in areas, and existing concourse renovations and expansions.
Ongoing Impact
With several years of airport improvements still ahead, Penhall Subsurface continues to provide digital X-ray imaging to support Denver International Airport's evolving infrastructure needs. By helping identify embedded conditions before coring and demolition, Penhall contributes to safer, better-informed construction planning throughout this major airport renovation.
