Demolition at 21st Ave Undercrossing
Penhall was contracted by Bridgeway Civil for the demolition of the 21st Ave bridge undercrossing on Hwy 99 in Sacramento, a high-profile infrastructure project. The process began with slotting the bridge deck and torching the rebar to expose the girders. Using boom lifts, a team secured rigging from a 550-ton crane while excavators broke the girder ends free. Once detached, the crane lifted each girder and placed it in a designated stockpile area for further removal.

• Bridge Deck Slotting & Rebar Torching – Exposing girders for removal
• Heavy Equipment Operation – Boom lifts, excavators, and crane for precise demolition
• Rigging & Lifting – Secure placement of girders for further breaking
• Safety Execution – Working over an active highway with strict safety protocols

This complex demolition required careful planning and expert coordination to ensure safe, efficient removal of the bridge components without disrupting the active highway.

Wire Saw five (5) remaining bridge piers that we left in place following the implosion of the superstructure Piers were 150’ tall x 40’ long x 10’ wide. The wire saw removal limits were at mudline, 105’ deep underwater. Wire sawing underwater eliminated the time and expense of cofferdams and dewatering required for conventional underwater demolition. Core drill rigging hole and wire sawed piers into 6’ vertical lift sections weighing approx. 25 tons per pick Completed project in seven (7) months incident and injury free. Note – I am still gathering the total wire saw quantities and core drill quantities.

Precision Wall Sawing at HWY 147 Bridge in Durham, NC
Penhall was contracted by Dragados USA to perform wall sawing services for the HWY 147 bridge joint replacement in Durham, NC. Using a Husqvarna 482 Wall Saw with angle brackets, our team precisely cut the bridge joint slide plate at a 45-degree angle, ensuring safe and efficient removal while maintaining the integrity of the surrounding structure.
