Concrete Scarifying & Shaving
Indoor concrete surfaces which have been poured incorrectly or subsequently damaged—whether structurally or aesthetically—can set a project back significantly, or impede day-to-day operations. Penhall can shave or scarify these surfaces to remedy common problems, to prepare for resurfacing, or to create safer walking and driving surfaces.
CONCRETE SCARIFYING
Scarifiers, also known as surface planers or milling machines, are used to cut or scar the surface of concrete with the use of tungsten carbide cutting tools that rotate around a drum. Scarifiers remove concrete quickly and aggressively, leaving concrete surface profiles (CSPs) ranging from 4 to 7.
Scarifying is useful in applications where an existing surface is not in a suitable condition, such as the removal of old coatings—including floor tile mastics, rubbery adhesives, and epoxy—leveling uneven surfaces and misaligned joints which pose a trip hazard.
The resulting surface profile is ideal for creating a durable surface bond for new floor coatings, such as epoxy, grout, and other coverings.
The cutting depths of Penhall’s scarifiers are adjustable, with some models achieving up to ¼” of material removal in just one pass. This allows us to perform heavy milling on a large scale. We have removed a half inch or more from surfaces measuring tens of thousands of square feet in challenging circumstances where simply tearing out the existing surface was infeasible due to cost or time limitations.
CONCRETE SHAVING
In applications where concrete surfaces must be repaired using a lower impact solution—or where a more finished surface is desired—concrete shaving is often the ideal solution. Diamond shaving or grinding is a process in which surface material is removed using stacked diamond blades mounted on a rotating drum, producing a smooth, grooved surface.
Shaving is effective in leveling misaligned joints and uneven surfaces, and achieves a surface profile that is smoother than scarifying, creating more of a corduroy type appearance and texture. Our concrete shaving services have proved to be a particularly ideal solution in applications demanding a grooved, high-traction surface, such as the resurfacing of parking ramps, handicap ramps, warehouse floors, and environments where heavy moisture is often present.
