Developing skilled concrete sawing professionals takes more than learning how to operate equipment. It requires hands-on experience, a strong understanding of safety procedures, technical knowledge, and continued development in real-world jobsite conditions.
At Penhall Company’s Huntsville Training Center, employees recently participated in the Wire Saw / Flat Saw 101 Boot Camp, an intensive training program designed to build foundational skills in two specialized concrete sawing methods.
Through focused instruction, repetitive hands-on exercises, equipment demonstrations, and testing, the program helps trainees strengthen their technical knowledge and prepare for continued development in the field.
Building Skills Through Hands-On Training
Penhall’s Operator Skills Training Program (OSTP) boot camps provide concentrated instruction in a controlled training environment. The goal is to accelerate technical skill development and reduce the amount of time needed for on-the-job training, while reinforcing the knowledge employees need to perform their work safely and effectively.
The Wire Saw / Flat Saw 101 curriculum covered several core areas, including:
- Equipment Operation and Maintenance: Understanding equipment functions, inspections, proper tool care, and manufacturer-specific operating requirements.
- Diamond Tooling Fundamentals: Learning how diamond blades and wire are used in concrete sawing, including their applications and performance.
- Wire and Blade Setup: Practicing installation, crimping, tightening, and proper setup procedures.
- Wire Saw Configuration: Learning pulley placement, surface positioning, wire travel, and techniques to help reduce friction during operation.
- Standard Operating Procedures: Reviewing Penhall’s wire saw and flat saw SOPs and the procedures that guide safe, consistent work.
- Pre-Task Planning and Hazard Awareness: Emphasizing hazard recognition, planning before work begins, and awareness of silica exposure.
- Customer Service and Professionalism: Reinforcing expectations for professional conduct and customer interactions on the jobsite.
Trainees also completed written and hands-on testing as part of the OSTP Wire Saw / Flat Saw 101 curriculum.
Training on Specialized Sawing Equipment
A key part of the boot camp involved setting up and operating the equipment used in concrete cutting applications. Working directly with these systems allowed trainees to practice the setup procedures and operational controls associated with different saw configurations.
Training equipment included:
- Diamond Products M-2 Hydraulic Basic Wire Saw System: Trainees demonstrated safe setup and operation of the system.
- Hilti 3018 Wire Saw System: Trainees practiced setup and operational control.
- Merit 500 Flat Saw: Training covered the 57-horsepower gasoline-powered rear-pivot flat saw.
Instruction also addressed operational differences among manufacturer-specific saws and equipment configurations. Because equipment can vary from one branch or jobsite to another, continued instruction on additional makes and models remains an important part of field development.
Safety Is Part of Every Step
Safe equipment operation starts before the saw is running. Proper inspections, equipment setup, hazard recognition, and pre-task planning all contribute to a safer work environment.
Throughout the boot camp, trainees reviewed equipment maintenance and inspection procedures, Penhall’s Standard Operating Procedures, and the importance of identifying jobsite hazards before work begins. Silica exposure awareness was also incorporated into pre-task planning instruction.
Hands-on practice gives employees an opportunity to reinforce these fundamentals in a controlled environment before applying them to actual project conditions. Repetition helps trainees become more familiar with the equipment, setup requirements, and procedures they will use in the field.
Boot Camp Is Just the Beginning
Completing the Wire Saw / Flat Saw 101 Boot Camp is an important milestone in the OSTP development process, but it is not the final step.
After boot camp, trainees must continue developing their skills in the field under the supervision of a qualified branch trainer. This stage includes completing the applicable OSTP checklist sheets and demonstrating the required skills through real-time, job-specific applications.
Field training allows branch trainers to reinforce the fundamentals introduced during boot camp while helping employees apply those skills to the equipment, conditions, and tasks they encounter on the job.
Successful completion of both the boot camp and the required field training components is necessary to achieve OSTP graduate status.
This combination of structured instruction and supervised field experience supports continued skill development and helps employees build confidence as they take on more responsibility.
Investing in the Future of Skilled Trades
Specialized concrete sawing requires technical knowledge, attention to detail, and a commitment to safe work practices. Programs like the Wire Saw / Flat Saw 101 Boot Camp provide employees with a structured foundation while reinforcing the importance of continued learning in the field.
By combining hands-on instruction, equipment-specific training, testing, and supervised field development, Penhall continues to invest in the people and skills that support its concrete cutting operations.
At Penhall, developing skilled employees is an ongoing process, built through training, experience, and a commitment to doing the job right.
