Penhall was selected to support the structural retrofit of 33 wind turbine foundations at the Ashtabula II Wind Farm in Luverne, ND. Working under Landwehr Construction for owner Otter Tail Power Company, Penhall performed extensive GPR scanning and high-volume precision core drilling to support reinforced concrete collar installations. These retrofits were essential for upgrading turbine load capacity as part of a wind farm repowering initiative—extending the life and output of existing infrastructure.
COLORADO RIVER AQUEDUCT

The Colorado River Aqueduct is a massive 242-miles long water conveyance that provides Southern California with a large majority of its drinking water. Overtime, the structures’ concrete begins to crack, and water begins to rust the underlying rebar.

A newly renovated cell house at a zinc recycling plant caught fire after a loose belt sparked a tank of magnesium, causing a fire that burned for more than 12 hours. The intense heat severely damaged the structural columns and beams as well as the 72 T-Cells which housed the electrolyte for the recycling process.

During the last two weeks in April, Penhall crews from the Atlanta branch performed the demolition of a 900 SF x 6" thick concrete bridge deck which required hand removal and disposal of 16 CY of rubble and steel rebar. The concrete had to be removed due to low compressive strength.

Penhall Company was tasked to sawcut and dice for removal a 360’ long x 16’ wide x 6” thick concrete platform deck on top of 8” of structural foam with 14” extended steel plated overhangs. Crews were mobilized from various divisions to complete the task during (2) weekend closures inside Sound Transit Tunnel.
