How We Use GPR
Crew and Worksite Safety
What We Can Detect

GROUND PENETRATING RADAR SCANNING PROTECTS YOUR CREW AND SCHEDULE

GPR concrete scanning is a non-destructive testing (NDT) method that uses ground penetrating radar technology to accurately locate embedded objects within concrete structures before cutting or coring. Our GPR scanning services send radar pulses into a slab, wall, or deck and read the reflected signals to identify rebar, post-tension cables, electrical conduits, and voids. The result is a comprehensive "map" of the subsurface, ensuring structural integrity is maintained and worker safety is prioritized.

We use ground penetrating radar to locate AND MARK critical subsurface features before you cut.

Penhall uses the latest available GPR technology, so you can core drill, saw cut, and break concrete without accidents, injuries, or time delays. Our trained technicians scan and locate subsurface features with precision, reducing the safety risk to your crew and keeping your project on schedule.
New construction and renovation work often requires cutting, coring, or breaking a concrete slab. This is dangerous work. Rebar, pipes, post-tension cables, and electrical conduits are frequently hidden below the surface, and striking one can injure a crew member, damage equipment, or shut a job site down. This is why every project should scan before it cores. Stopping work because of equipment damage, structural damage, or a crew injury limits your ability to finish on time and adds real cost to a project.

GPR ENSURES SAFETY

Safety comes first on every Penhall job site. GPR scanning lets us locate subsurface features and protect the integrity and strength of the concrete as your crew cuts, cores, or breaks. Once we detect a feature, we mark its location clearly on the surface. This guides your cutting and drilling crews so they can work without damaging equipment or putting themselves at risk. Choosing Penhall's concrete scanning services is a proactive step toward an accident-free work zone that still meets your deadline.

GPR DETECTION

Our GPR services can detect a variety of subsurface features.

Identifying the type and location of subsurface features is a required step before cutting, coring, or breaking concrete. Several features commonly show up inside a concrete slab, wall, or deck. We read the data our GPR equipment collects to determine what's below the surface and exactly where it sits, so you can drill, saw, or break while protecting the structure and avoiding costly repairs. Our GPR scanning services can precisely locate a wide range of embedded materials and structural elements, including:

Rebar detection

Steel rebar reinforces the structural strength of nearly every concrete slab. A single slab can contain hundreds of feet of rebar. Our GPR scanning locates rebar and rebar patterns and marks their exact position, so your crew can cut, core, or break the concrete safely.

Post-tension cable detection

Post-tension cables hold extremely high tension. Cutting one can cause the surrounding concrete to fail and put anyone nearby at serious risk. We use GPR scanning to locate post-tension cables, protecting your crew and preserving the integrity of the structure.

Pipes and conduits detection

Electrical wiring run through concrete slabs inside conduit creates a shock hazard if it's cut, and severing a line can cause a power outage that costs time and money to fix. Our GPR scanning services detect the location of pipes and conduits ahead of time, so your crew can cut, core, or break with confidence.

Voids and deterioration detection

Voids in concrete (air gaps between the subgrade, soil, and the slab) form over time from erosion, compaction, or a pipe rupture. Voids and general deterioration weaken a concrete slab, but these problems are invisible without specialized scanning equipment. Our GPR scanning finds voids and marks their location, so construction can continue without the risk of a collapse.

frequently asked questions

What is GPR scanning and how does it work?

GPR scanning (ground penetrating radar scanning) sends radar pulses into concrete or soil and reads the signals that bounce back. Rebar, post-tension cables, conduit, and voids each produce a distinct radar signature, so a trained technician can read the data on site and mark the location of buried or embedded objects before cutting, coring, or drilling.

Can GPR scanning be used for detecting underground utilities?

Yes. GPR scanning can locate underground utilities such as electrical conduit, water lines, and gas lines before excavation or concrete cutting begins, in addition to what's embedded inside the slab itself. Radar pulses reflect off buried lines and metal objects, allowing a technician to trace and mark utility paths on the surface. GPR scanning is used alongside a formal utility locate request, such as an 811 call, rather than as a replacement for it.

What are the benefits of using GPR scanning services for infrastructure inspection?

GPR scanning services let infrastructure teams inspect bridges, roads, and buildings without radiation exposure, evacuation zones, or damage to the structure. Because it's non-destructive, GPR scanning provides real-time results on site, helps avoid cutting into rebar or utilities, and reduces the risk of costly repairs, delays, or safety incidents during a project.

How does GPR scanning compare to other non-destructive testing methods?

GPR uses radar pulses to image the subsurface. This generates a graphic called a "radargram," which a trained GPR technician interprets to identify and mark features below the surface. Digital X-ray imaging produces a clearer, more detailed view with little need for data interpretation, but it requires access to both sides of a concrete structure and a radiation safety zone, which makes it impossible to use in many field conditions. Physical coring or a test cut can confirm a specific finding but is destructive and limited to one spot at a time. GPR scanning is the right first choice for most jobs because of its flexibility, accuracy, and cost effectiveness across a large area.

Are GPR and X-ray imaging the same?

GPR and X-ray imaging are not the same. GPR uses radar pulses to image the subsurface. This generates a graphic called a "radargram," which features undulations of varying size. A trained GPR technician is needed to interpret the data, identify the features represented by the radargram, and mark where the features are located in the subsurface.

X-ray imaging produces a clearer, more detailed view of the subsurface, meaning there is little or no need for data interpretation. However, X-ray imaging requires access to both sides of a concrete structure, making it impossible to use in many instances.

GPR is a great choice for concrete scanning due to its flexibility, accuracy, and cost effectiveness

Does GPR identify the difference between rebar, post-tension cables, and pipes and conduits?

GPR detects subsurface features, but does not identify the type of subsurface feature. However, our crews are trained and have a wealth of experience using GPR and interpreting data. For example, there are specific markers—shape, size, and location—that tell us what the feature is, even if it is not immediately clear to the untrained eye.

How does GPR handle different soil or aggregate types?

GPR performs effectively across various soil and aggregate types. Accuracy levels can vary based on the material’s composition, for example GPR signals penetrate well through dry or non-conductive soils, but experience reduced clarity in wet or highly-conductive soils.

Can you scan through various materials like asphalt or rock?

Yes, GPR is versatile and can scan through materials like asphalt, rock, concrete and even ice. The technology is designed to detect subsurface features, voids and anomalies within these materials, making it suitable for many different applications.

Is real-time data available for review on-site?

Yes, our GPR systems offer real-time data visualization that allows operators to review subsurface information directly on-site. Immediate feedback helps the team to identify utilities, voids or obstructions quickly, enabling informed and efficient operations during the scanning process.

How deep can GPR scan into concrete?

The depth of GPR scanning depends on the concrete's composition and the antenna frequency used. Generally, GPR can effectively scan from 12 to 18 inches deep into standard concrete slabs. For specific applications, such as scanning for voids beneath a slab-on-grade, lower frequency antennas can be used to achieve greater depth penetration.

What is the accuracy of GPR concrete scanning?

GPR concrete scanning is highly accurate, typically locating the center of embedded objects within a quarter-inch of their actual position. The vertical accuracy, or depth estimation, is usually within 10-15% of the slab's thickness. This level of precision is crucial for safely clearing areas for core drilling and saw cutting.

What is the cost of GPR scanning services and how is it calculated?

The cost of GPR scanning services depends on the size of the area being scanned, the complexity of embedded materials, site accessibility, and how quickly results are needed.

What types of tools are used in GPR scanning services?

GPR scanning services use a handheld or cart-mounted ground penetrating radar unit with an antenna tuned to a specific frequency range, along with data collection software that displays results on site in real time. Technicians also use marking paint or chalk to flag findings directly on the concrete surface.

What are the steps involved in GPR scanning services?

A GPR scanning service follows five steps: reviewing the project scope and target area, setting up and calibrating the GPR unit, scanning the area in a grid pattern, reading and interpreting the radar data on site, and marking the locations of rebar, cables, conduit, or voids before cutting or coring begins.

How long does a typical GPR scanning project take to complete?

Scan time depends on the size and complexity of the area. Results are marked on site as the scan happens, so cutting and coring crews rarely have to wait on a separate report.

What kind of training or certification do GPR scanning technicians need?

GPR scanning technicians need hands-on training in radar equipment operation, data interpretation, and OSHA safety standards. Field experience matters as much as the equipment, since reading radar data accurately depends on recognizing signal patterns across different concrete ages, thicknesses, and conditions.

CONCRETE INSPECTION METHODS: GROUND PENETRATING RADAR AND X-RAY IMAGING

Construction projects are often delayed because of issues resulting from hazards embedded in a concrete surface. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and Digital X-Ray Imaging can be used to find these hidden problems before they cause delays and cost you money.
