Sacramento International Airport

Sacramento, CA | April 2019

Sacramento International Airport (SMF) serves the greater Sacramento region. In 2019, over 13 million people flew out of SMF to destinations across the country. 

Our scope of work for this project included cutting a 40” x 86” door opening in the control tower at the Sacramento International Airport. The door would serve as a new emergency fire exit for the people working at the top of the control tower. The wall was almost 15” thick with highly reinforced steel. We cut the door into approximately 12” x 12” cubes as we were not able to cut and drop the door in one piece due to the opening being elevated above the roof of a building below.

Cutting and removing this door opening was unique in that it was not at ground level. The elevation of the door was located about 4’ from top of the existing roof level. We developed a safe cut plan with our office personnel and our field crew prior to mobilizing to the job. When we were ready to begin, there were no surprises and we completed the job safely and successfully.

City of Ten Thousand Buddha’s Earth Store

Sacramento, CA | June 2016

Removal of 82’ tall concrete chimney/smokestack. Access would not allow a conventional wrecking method so the structure was sawcut and picked with a crane. Smokestack sawcut into 10’ tall sections for salvage and re-use at the Buddhist Temple for monuments on site. Job was located at one of the first Chan Buddhist Temples built in the United States and is still one of the largest Buddhist communities in the Western Hemisphere. Completed project with five (5) fewer crane days than estimated through the ingenuity of the team and the assistance of a structure engineer. Pre-drilled all the pick holes and pre-cut two sides of the smokestack prior to bringing in the crane for removal of the 10’ tall sections.

CalTrans District #2 Interstate 5 Bridge

Sacramento, CA | October 2017

Wire Saw five (5) remaining bridge piers that we left in place following the implosion of the superstructure Piers were 150’ tall x 40’ long x 10’ wide. The wire saw removal limits were at mudline, 105’ deep underwater. Wire sawing underwater eliminated the time and expense of cofferdams and dewatering required for conventional underwater demolition. Core drill rigging hole and wire sawed piers into 6’ vertical lift sections weighing approx. 25 tons per pick Completed project in seven (7) months incident and injury free. Note – I am still gathering the total wire saw quantities and core drill quantities.

SRD-SCE Agnew Dam Response

Mono County, CA | September 2017

Flood control upgrades to the remote Agnew Dam outside of the Ansel Adams Wilderness Area. The Dam is located on Rush Creek, at an elevation of 8,499 feet above mean sea level (MSL) on the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, in Mono County, California. The Dam is located in the Inyo National Forest, fourteen miles upstream from Mono Lake, near the town of June Lake, CA. The Dam was constructed in 1916. It is a 30-foot high, 278-foot long concrete multiple arch dam. The Dam has five complete arches and two partial arches located at the ends. The project required sawcutting and removing two additional openings at the arches to allow for lowering the upstream water level during flood events. This was done following the Oroville Dam catastrophe. Penhall Crews headed to work each day in a 12 minute helicopter ride. Yes, a helicopter ride. The extremely remote location of the project required all employees, equipment and material to be flown in with passenger helicopters and a Skycrane helicopter, Sikorsky S-64. Two openings, 5’5” x 6’6” x 2’2” thick had to be sawcut into 4 pieces per opening to allow for removal with the Skycrane helicopter. The layout was first cut partial depth approx. 3/8” wide with a wall saw and followed up with a wire saw to attain a precise cut in the 26” concrete with no overcuts. All slurry had to be captured, collected and hauled off site in this environmentally sensitive location. All work was complete on schedule and without incident.

Stockton, CA | November 2020

Provided Utility Locating prior to saw cutting and excavating Saw Cut and Remove Concrete 1 Location – 2’ x 40’, up to 5” thick slab on grade Dust Control, Slurry Disposal and Off Haul Excavate and Import Sand 2’ wide trench and 4’ deep. Import 12” thick amount of sand (5 tons) Estimated 5’ of hand digging from trench to building. Next Day Backfill and compact with native soil 2’ wide trench and 4’ deep. Our crew did a phenomenal job completing this job safely. Completed within budget and within our deadline.
